Fishing Bay 72nd Annual Regatta at Fishing Bay, VirginiaAugust 13 - 14
Story
Good Day to All,
Three races were sailed in medium to heavy air at the 72nd Annual One Design fishing Bay Regatta on Saturday 13 August 2011.

Winds at the start of the first race were around 8 knots and continued to build all day. John & Ann Danneberger started the race on a port tack and crossed the fleet leading the way on the Windward – Leeward course. The rest of the pack all rounded close together with a big battle for second place. Lon & Meg were able to hold Allen Chauvenet & Sara Steward off and claim the coveted 2nd place. Roy & Jim Black, Ralph & Sandy rounded the mark with Alan Taylor & Matt Sponar the boats sailed the leg almost side by side with Ralph and Alan able to get a half boat lead. Not to be left behind Dan & Ken Zaremski and Miles Booth & Rufus Yonan were still battling down the run while trying to figure out the boat.

The start of race # 2 winds were in the 10-12 knots range and gusting to 15 knots. Ralph went for clean air away from the pack on the second windward leg and passed everyone rounding the mark next to John. John never stopped playing the main sheet and made dealing with the heavy air and building waves look easy. Dan and Ken turned over on the windward leg and were able to get the boat up and sailing again.

By race #3 the wind, waves and delay to change the course started to wear on everyone. The wind was in the 14 – 16 knots and gust to 18+. John and Roy battled tack for tack up the windward leg. Roy and his crew Jim sailed the boat flat in the waves and heavy air and got second in the race. Allen & Sara sailed their own race and claimed 3rd place. Lon hit the windward mark, while he and Meg were completing their penalty turn they turned over. But not to worry everyone was safe and he was able to complete the race in 7th. Just squeezing through Lon’s overturned boat and the mark Alan Taylor & Matt flew down the leeward leg wearing big smiles ear to ear. Then one wrong wave and they turned over. Ralph and Miles were able to get by and get 4th and 5th place. Alan and Matt were able to right the boat and claim 6th. Dan and Ken sailed a conservative race and finished 8th.

While cleaning up and securing the boats several people came by to say they had a Windmill. Hopefully the excitement will get the addition of some new people and boats for next years regatta. After racing discussion meeting centered on keeping the boat flat and managing the heavy air and waves. A lovely pasta dinner and flowing drinks were enjoyed by all. The live band was outstanding, playing many songs from the 70’s to current hits. Allen Chauvenet was seen hitting the dance floor grooving to the beat.

Day 2

Learning the lessons from the day before, windmills started the day playing in the heavy winds while waiting for the RC to set the course. Many people had smiles across their face as they were planing to windward. But thunderstorms and squalls threatened and the RC decided to send everyone back to the yacht club and packing the boats for home.
