Good Day to All,
You know your heading to the country when the directions say to turn right when you see the Buffaloes. The racing at Corsica River was great. We had 7 boats this weekend with tight racing and lots of people changing positions each day. The wind was light (4-6 kts with gust to 8-10 kts) but steady and it was another hot 100 degree weekend. The courses were windward leeward one or two legs for race 1, 2, 4, 5, 6 and true Olympic course for race 3 on Saturday. After our own start, we shared the course with Lasers, Laser radials, Comets, Penguins, Beach Cats and A-Cats. It made the racing interesting especially when we would pass several classes and you would hear them say "Gee, Windmills are fast". I did overhear one RC person say "Dad, I want a Windmill" when we started our race. My immediate reply was "Honey we have one ready for you to try any time you want". After racing get together was just as good as the racing. Again the Windmills had lots of people come by and express interest and ask questions. Someone was always around to talk to them and everyone saw how we stuck together and had time to laugh, drink and eat.
Kudos to Ken Noble for bringing both of his boats and getting his high school friend Martin Tulier to sail with his son Bill the whole regatta. Every time we passed their were lots of smiles on both boats. Martin's wife who sailed with Ken on Saturday had a good time. Alan Tayler and Sue Nuyda drove up from NC and kept the racing close. Alan even remembered how to country dance when the Bluegrass band started to play. The entire band was fantastic and you can't go wrong when you hear "Rocky-Top and “Like a Fox on the Run". Lon and Meg were the boat to beat this regatta. Carrol Sparwasser and Jeremy were always right in the mix too. Dyer Harris and Jim Georgeson came to Saturdays racing with their beautiful boat making it into lots of the pictures. Ralph and I had our moments of brilliance when we would catch the right wind and current shift to get a couple of bullets. Sometimes it also helps if the jib blocks are in the right position and the boom vang is on or off. But that’s racing... if it was easy no one would do it. Dinner was Eastern Shore fare using the local farms as the suppliers. BBQ chicken, corn on the cob, baked beans, fresh cucumber and tomato salad, coleslaw, potato salad, watermelon, cantaloupe that was so sweet I couldn't resist taking a bite. The brownie and chocolate chip cookie was a sweet tooth dream come true.
See how your schedule works out next year after Nationals. It certainly was a great regatta. You can see all the pictures on the www.cryc.org web site click on annual regatta.
