SMSA Regatta at Solomons, Maryland | September 25 - 26 |
Story |
Good Day to All,
Racing at Solomons Island was very interesting. We raced in the Portsmouth fleet with Lightnings, Interlakes, Vanguards and a Flying Scot making a 15 boat fleet. The winds on Saturday were 8-10 knots dropping down to 4 knots for 1 race with a light chop. Sunday winds were a bit stronger 15 -16 kts and 2 foot chop. Everyone was challenged due to the competitiveness of the Lightnings and the Vanguards. Lots of people were impressed with our boat speed. Several times we caught up to the lasers and buccineers that had up to a 15 minute head start. The (5) Lightnings were confounded to look up and see us in their ranks. They had to always be aware of where we were and raced against us as much as each other. We definitely impacted their positions as they tacked and planned their strategy. We spoke to several nice people who raced Vanguards and the Albacore to entice them into a Windmill. Hopefully next year they will give it a chance at RHYC. Although our fleet finishing ranking was 4th Lon and Meg, 5th Bill and Chesa Blanton and 7th Ralph and Sandy Sponar those finishes were very respectable. Lon and Meg in Pig Headed Race 1: 1 Race 2: 7 Race 3: 4 Race 4: 3 Race 5: 6 Race 6: 4 Bill and Chesa in Pot Rivit Race 1: 5 Race 2: 5 Race 3: 12 Race 4: 2 Race 5: 7 Race 6: 9 Ralph and Sandy in Longtail Race 1: 7 Race 2: 12 Race 3: 7 Race 4: 6 Race 5: 5 Race 6: 5 Hopefully, next year our schedules will allow us to get our own start and race against each other. Fair winds and smooth Sailing, Ralph and Sandy Sponar Longtail 3524 |
