Rock Hall YC Down River Race at Rock Hall YC, MarylandJune 19
Story
Windmills comprised 5 of the 30-boat fleet participating in the annual
"downriver race" from Chestertown to Rock Hall the day prior to the
Rock Hall YC regatta. This race is a tradition dating back 75 years
and while the top finishes are now dominated by A-Cats, Windmill gave
a great account of themselves with the Windmill winner being the
second monohull one-design to finish, behind a Highlander by a few
minutes.

The race was sailed under ideal conditions with beautiful weather and
enough breeze for intermittent planing. The unusual wind direction led
(in spite of two bends in the river) to an entirely downwind race with
some of the Windmill never tacking during the entire 12 nautical
miles...though boats had poles up and down and occaisionally jibed.
This led to a very rapid trip down with the leading all Windmills
finishing in less than 2 hours 5 minutes over this long course.

The entire 5-boat fleet (including new builder Dan Litten, sailing a
Windmill for the first time...using Dyer Harris' glass boat) was close
together throughout, with many lead changes. George Kuney and Susan
Bloomgarden won by a bit over a minute and the 2nd through 4th boats
were within 30 seconds of each other with the last boat only 3 minutes
behind the leader in a 2 hour race.

RHYC Windmill Fleet 82 Awarded the Russell Chauvenet Perpetual Trophy
for the first time to George and Susan. This trophy was actually won
at the RHYC in 1980 by Russell Chauvenet and was re-done by Dyer
Harris to serve as a suitable perpetual trophy.

This is a very different sort of race (no marks) and while the turnout
this year was good we'd be delighted (of course) to have more than 5
Windmills race "Downriver" next year!
