2009 Midwinters (Fireballs & Friends) at Davis Island Yacht Club, Davis Island, FL | March 13 - 15 |
Story |
First Day Report:
Jennings 1-1-3; Larry Christian 2-2-2 (surprise, surprise); Ellis 4-3-1 (broke outhaul at start of race l) Lon Ethington standing 4th. Very light first race. Drifter at times. Sit in the boat second race. Hiking third race. Second day of racing for the Windmill Midwinters. Inexpicably, the RC rescheduled the start for noon today instead of the expected 9:30. Naturally there was nice breeze all morning. Then we had a true drifter for our first race after 12:00. Jennings was the first to make the very slow tack to go right, followed by Bob K sailing Ethan's boat. John got a long way ahead when a small zypher appeared on the right. Larry Christian sneaked in there as he always does in light air, with Ellis fourth, Then there were two great races with a sea breeze, sit on the deck and moderate hiking. Ellis won both of these, the first by a wide margin and the second, with a little more breeze, closer. John, Larry and Lon followed in some order or another. Finally the fourth race of the day was a bit more wind, depowering conditions. Crew weight started to affect the speed. John was first, Larry second and Ellis third. So the battle for second, after John Jennings who counts three firsts and three seconds, I think, is between Ellis with three firsts two 3rds and a 4th and Larry with a bunch of seconds counted. Throwout is in effect. I had to leave quickly before any results were posted. Wife's neice wedding. Got there JUST in time at 6:00 PM all dressed up. Whew. One more day of racing. Sunday started with another light air race. Drifter at times. Then a decent race, but light. Last race looked to be another light air affair so many headed for the beach. Bob Sailed, Lon did not, so that exchanged their standings. Lon had a long way to go to get home, first through third were not to be changed by that last race. Joel’s boat pulled the forestay out of the deck while doing very well in the windy Saturday last race. Roy’s boat had termites that drowned due to incursion of liquid. Get LOTS more information on the Jouster and e-jouster the first of May. Dave Ellis |
