Go For The Gold at Scott's Flat Lake, Nevada City, Ca | June 4 - 5 |
Story |
With record breaking heat forecast for the San Joaquin Valley we were
happy to be at 3000' in the Sierra mountains with much more comfortable weather. Three Windmills were sailing. Eric Swenson and Harrison McDowell, who is now the new owner of Windmill 2101; Scott Rovanpera and Kohe from Japan; Darrell Sorensen and Marylou Brenich. The main event at the regatta was the West Coast Masters Laser championship with over 20 Lasers taking part. No wind Saturday morning, everyone sculled or paddled to the committee boat to wait for wind. The committee boat had music playing, some of the constants were cooling off in the water and were were entertained by one woman dancing on her Laser. Finally there was enough wind to sail (just). One windward/lured race and one to the windward mark where they thankfully moved the finish to. Saturday evening there was a nice dinner, followed by music and dancing to a very good 6 piece band. All six of us shared a campsite that wasn't far from the launching ramp and party. Sunday it started out with more of the same, we sailed a shortened windward leeward course. Then the wind started to fill in. Race 2 was the full windward, leeward. Race 3 the wind really started to blow with sailing on a windward, gibe, leeward course. There were several capsizes, including ours due to a crew error. Eric and Harrison stopped to give us aid as Marylou and I were having trouble getting back into the boat. Harrison is young and strong, he shoved me over the transom first, doing so I landed on the tiller breaking it off the rudder. Harrison got in last. To get back to shore Harrison steered by just holding on the the rudder. Amazingly with three in the boat plus extra water we had the boat on plane for a while. All in all we had a great time. |
