Lake Yosemite Regatta May 14-15
Plenty of wind and crazy wind. After a few days of 90 degree plus temperatures it cooled of to the upper 70's and when that happens it means wind and lots of it. We had 6 Windmills ready to race at Lake Yosemite, two of them were new owners that have sailed larger boats, but never had raced a Windmill. Saturday we had Scott Rovanpera with Ariel Erojo, she is 15 and is learning to sail on Bytes & El Toros; Eric Swenson & Jim Grasley; Mike Bloed & his son C. J. both new to Windmills and also new to Windmills Paul Slemmons with Sharon Antner, a 14 year old LYSA Jr. sailor who is an experienced Windmill crew. Father - son team of Matt and Everett Loeffer wasn't ready to sail. I elected to stay in on race one due to the small size and inexperience of my crew Joanne Clarke, who has sailed several years cruising the South Pacific. Soon Paul and Mike came in as the conditions was too much for them. That left 2 boats for the race. Scott finished first and Eric second. Joanne and I made it out for the second race, Eric dropped out. The finishing order for races 2 and 3 were Scott then myself. After finishing race 3 Joanne and I capsized. Sunday: Joanne had enough of this so Sharon crewed for me. Matt and Everett finally were ready to race. Scott made the trip back to Walnut Creek to pick Sunday's crew, Kohl a 17 year old foreign exchange student from Tokyo Japan. The wind wasn't any stronger than Saturday but there were a lot of gusts and shifts. You never knew what the wind was going to do next. Lake Yosemite uses a “connect the dots” course, it was a hoot sailing on plane from marks 1 to 4! In the first race Scott capsized and a DNF, Matt won the race and I was second. Sunday's second race Matt capsized and had a boat load of water due to leaky air tanks. Scott capsized again just before the finish, but got going just in time with water in the boat to beat me to the line. Even though there were also numerous capsizes in other classes and a puncture wound that required a few stitches, everyone at the regatta had a great time. Saturday's dinner was superb and the trophies that I made were well received. This regatta offers such amenities as free camping, both motor home and tent on the club house lawn. A nice park setting on the lake. We would like to see even more Windmills at next year's regatta. Mark you calendar for May 20-21, 2017. |
