Redwood Regatta at Big Lagoon, Trinidad, Ca | September 5 - 6 |
Story |
Last year at RWR we had issues with weed in the water. There were areas on
the course that you had to avoid. We did get stuck once and had a bit of a battle to get out but overall not too bad. This year we arrived to find weed starting at the shore and extending out 150 yds or so. Since the launch is a lee shore any sailing would require a paddle out across the weed, ship the rudder and raise sails against a 10 to 15 head wind. We watched an I14 that managed to get out, hit the weed on the way back and stop dead 150 yds out. They couldn't raise their board as is was wrapped in weed so they went overboard to clear it and swam/paddled back in. In addition to the weed reef on the shore you could see brown patches randomly spread about the lagoon. We camped Friday and Saturday night and left on Saturday morning, our boat never left the trailer. My sister lives in McKinleyville so we made our trip into a visit with Olivias auntie. So heres the deal with Big Lagoon. In normal weather rain fall fills the lagoon until it overflows the spit and forms a breach into the ocean. After the lagoon drains, the breach allows salt water into the lagoon which kills the weed and you have a nice place to sail. No rain, no breach, hella big weed. Locals told me the only other time in memory when it was as bad was 1977. We are looking for a fresh start for next season and some new places to sail. Any ideas? All the best, Michael & Olivia |
