Redwood Regatta at Trinidad, Ca | August 30 - 31 |
Story |
No shortage of wind at Big Lagoon this year. As the only Windmill we raced
in the HP Open with 10 other boats. The fleet was made up of snipes, a thistle, I14, LaserII, C15, 29er, etc. Race 1 and 2 had us moderately depowered for the beat and hiking hard all the way to the sand spit. A basic windward leeward got 2 races out of the way. The 3rd was in building wind and had Olivia and I a bit out of our comfort zone. They sent us on a clockwise triangle which gave us a wonderful reach along the spit. If Dave had been there he would have been screaming and yelling and throwing his arms in the air!! We ate a snipe on this leg and it was yummy. At the end of the day it was Thistle, Snipe, and us. Sunday started out with a healthy breeze and FOG. The left side was favored so you went to the spit on the left side and then followed it right to find the mark. We had 50 feet in the fog, missed the mark, found the weeds, and threw this one out. Some finished, some didn't. Fog then cleared, wind up some more, and the big anticlockwise triangle with TWO LONG WINDY reaching legs. Got to watch a spectacular capsize performed by the I14, trapeze, spinnaker and all, right up close. We finished just as the wind decided to get serious and ran straight for the beach. 25 to 30 with wall to wall white caps, knocked down our tent and blew our folding chairs away. So glad to be off the water! At the end of the day it was Thistle(third last year), Snipe(first last year), and us(second last year). Next year all of you have to come to this one or we will put a curse on you and all your children will be born naked. All the best, Michael and Olivia |
