Hoover Sailing Club Windmill Midwestern Regatta 2012 Meg and I plan our trip to Ohio early with great anticipation . We have been traveling to this regatta for five years. We are always impressed with the hospitality that is shown by everyone at Hoover Sailing Club. This year we had a commitment to race at Davis Island Yacht Club on Thursday so we had a late departure from the Tampa/St Petersburg area. Our trip up to Hoover went just fine, but we arrived Friday very tired. After rigging the boat and a soothing shower, we enjoyed a “welcome dinner” and a chance to chat and catch up with our Ohio friends. Craig was kind enough to let us stay with him a second time. Saturday we awoke to plenty of wind. Feeling that it would not be a problem for us we were ready to go. The first race had us not paying attention to the race committee which cost us not to hear the prep gun. We were just sailing around the start line when we hear all clear. Meg said that was our start, so we sheeted in although we were not in a very good spot. We managed to get up to forth place by the time we had finished the first triangle. We see the leaders turn at the weather mark and start going down wind. Meg insisted that it is two triangles, but I say it is not we sail till we can see the committee boat to see that it is two triangles, quickly retract the pole and headed back up to the Jibe mark. We are now in third and manage to pass Tim and finish second. The second race of the day we had a good start and led to the weather mark and then we just covered the people behind us. We won that race and the decision to go in for lunch was made. While we were at lunch, the wind picked up to a sustained 18 with gusts in the low 30’s so the call was made to cancel for the remainder of the day. It may not be the smartest thing to begin to imbibe at 1:30 in the afternoon, so Roy Sherman suggested we go miniature golfing at a near by course. What a hoot! It was laughter from start to finish. Eric Francois won the tournament with an impressive score including 2 hole in one shots. The Saturday night meal is ALWAYS worth the trip. A sumptuous meal began with an array of tasty appetizers, followed by a varied selection of main dishes, sides and a dizzying selection of home made desserts (yummmmm, Debbie date cookies), wine and beer. The meal is only made better by the camaraderie and of course “yachty karate”, discussing the day on the water. Many enjoyed watching the sun set over the water from the hill in front of the club to end a great day. Sunday we were greeted with great sailing conditions and Team Pig managed to win the first race. We got a second in the next race and were feeling pretty good about the regatta. Our feeling did not last to long when we had two fourths for the last two races. We thought that that Ralph and Matt Sponar with two firsts had overtaken us. When we were all done everyone at the club house was telling us what a great job we did. We looked at the results to find a one point victory over Sponar’s on Go Blue. Before the presentation of the awards, a spread is put out for lunch. (Did I mention how good the food is?) Everyone goes away with something, including the requisite Windmill “place sticks”, and a goodie bag. Hoover Sailing Club does an outstanding job both on the race course and on shore. Everyone at the club is hospitable, helpful and welcoming to everyone. We feel like everyone is a friend, and look forward to seeing them each year. Meg and I get to sail at allot of yacht clubs ,and can say that the Hoover Sailing Club is the best at everything that they do. Keep up the good work. See you next year! And we hope this will entice more out of Towner’s to make the trip. Lon & Meg |
