The second annual "Southern" Northern regatta was held at Bantam Lake in Morris, CT on 17-18 May, 2007. Five boats made it to this season opener, shaking off the cobwebs from a long winter's nap. Saturday was a picture perfect 72F day with winds from the Northwest at 15 to 20 kts. The winds were shifty as expected in lake sailing and two boats decided that their crew needed to test the water temperature (not too bad, once you get use to it!). After five races, Larry/Peter recorded 5 bullets while Jack/Brenden consistently placed at the other end of the standings. In the middle, Roy/Henry, Mark/Susan and Cliff/Matt traded 2nds, 3rds and 4ths.
At the end of racing on day one, Ray conducted an outbrief of the day's racing. This was very helpful as he and Larry covered everything from bearing (whether better to pinch or foot and when) to bearings (how to pack grease so your trailer does not break down on the way to the regatta) and plenty of info packed in between. Very informative and lots of questions from fellow sailors.
Sunday brought light and variable winds. Two races were conducted. A bald eagle flew over the race course between the races. The significance is not known (although it did coincide with Jack/Micheal's best finish!).
The Race Committee lead by Paul Borse and Ed Kavle did an excellent job of conducting the races. |
