There was a good turn out of boats at the annual Turkey Shoot
Regatta. 11 Banshees, also good fields of Thistles, Day Sailors and
FJ,s. The sailing team for UC Davis was also taking part in the
regatta. We were a little disappointed with only four Windmill
showing up, but we made a good showing on the water. In attendance
were: Scott & Jessica Rovanpera, Dave Nielsen & Sarah Strohl, David
Ladd and his daughter Cori, Darrell Sorensen with Tony Nunes for
crew.
Race 1 started with the wind on the light side. Scott and Jessica
took the win, followed by Dave and Sarah, David and Cori. Darrell &
Tony snagged the start line buoy at the end of the first lap and got
a DQ. The second race the wind started to build.
Dave & Sarah capsized but recovered to finish the race. Darrell &
Tony also capsized from a violent wind shift with Tony receiving a
mild concision from being hit by the boom. Jessica had been under the
weather all day and with Tony not being able to sail, I crewed for
Scott for the remaining races and the fun began. More Wind. Scott was
trying his best to beat Dave, but Dave always managed to get the
upper hand. one leg of the course we were always on plane and getting
wet from spray other times. Wind gusts and shifts with extreme hiking
out needed. Now I know why good Windmill sailors love their
Windmills. As we were lining up for race 6, to our disappointment the
race committee called it a day.
How did the other classed fair; there were numerous boats capsizing
all day long, one broke its mast. At the start of each race there was
less boats. The Banshees after starting with 11 only had 4 make the
call for race 5.
Our results were:
Dave / Sarha 2 (2) 1 1 1 5
Scott / Jessica / Darrell 1 1 2 2 (2) 6
David / Cori 3 3 3 3 DNC 12
Darrell / Tony DQ DNF DNC DNC DNC
